Vernon Oak felling scheduled for 16 or 17 October

Confirmation has now been received that Streets Ahead have scheduled the felling of the Vernon Oak on Vernon Road S17 3QE for next week. Residents have received letters and a notice is displayed stating work will commence on Monday 16 October for two days.

This is no ordinary tree, it's a healthy oak in fine condition, at least 150 years old, and was originally an old field boundary tree. It's registered with the Ancient Tree Forum and is supported by the Woodland Trust and also the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust.
After a campaign dating back two years, many local residents are incredibly disappointed that it has come to this. The tree is quite simply irreplaceable.. There are cheap and simple solutions which would allow the tree to be retained but these are not considered suitable by SCC.

Please join residents at 6pm this SUNDAY, 15 October, for a VIGIL FOR VERNON OAK. Bring a tea light and share poems and songs around the tree. A simple event suitable for all the family. This will be preceded at 4.30pm by an art event for all to participate in, materials provided or bring your own, and create a piece of art to treasure.

Then please come along on MONDAY 16/TUESDAY 17 October in the morning from 8am onwards, or earlier if you can, and join us in peaceful protest to make it clear that we reject the plans to fell this iconic mature tree. We'll be there all day and welcome company.
