Dore Festival: Walking Fortnight 2011

This is the eighth Walking Event organised by the Dore Village Society's Wyvern Walkers Group. The Walking Event was initiated in 2004 to provide a range of interesting local walks as part of the Dore Festival. The idea is that there will be something within the walks organised that everyone can enjoy, whatever their abilities and level of fitness. Set out below are four walks spread over the two week period.

It is acknowledged that walking is one of the easiest, sociable and most enjoyable forms of exercise and one that can have a very beneficial effect on your health. Hopefully these walks can either encourage non walkers to start walking or encourage those who currently walk a little to try a longer walk.

Please be sure to wear stout footwear, appropriate clothing and to bring some water. Please note that all walks are taken at your own risk and that the organisers can take no responsibility for injuries incurred or for any items lost.

Saturday 25th
June
Today's walk will be led by David Heslop. The walk will start from Ashover, a new area for the Wyvern Walkers. Because this will mean a longer journey than normal, there will be a stop for lunch during the walk and everyone should bring sandwiches. Starting from the centre of Ashover, this 5.6 mile walk goes via Eastwood Hall and Handley, before passing Ogston reservoir and Milltown. We will not return to Dore before mid-afternoon but will be rewarded with lovely views.
Saturday 2nd
July
This walk will be led by Chris Cave and, again, walkers should bring a packed lunch. The walk will be almost 5 miles long and will be on the moors above the Snake Pass. Starting from Doctor's Gate the walk will proceed via Old Woman, Crooked Clough, Higher Shelf Stones and part of the Pennine Way, visiting probably the most extensive air crash site on Bleaklow. We will not return to Dore before mid-afternoon.
Friday 8th
July
Today’s walk will start at 10.00am. It will be an extended Health Walk led by Sue Lee, one of Sheffield’s Health Rangers. This will be about 3 miles long. There will be refreshments after the walk.
Sunday 10th
July
This walk will be led by David Bearpark. Today we will start from the village and will walk to Hathersage across Houndkirk Moor and Dukes Drive before passing Carl Wark and Hathersage Moor, to arrive at Hathersage via the holloway below Scraperlow Hill. The distance will be about 5.5 miles. We will return to Dore either via bus or train.

Final Reminder:
For the Health Walk on 8th July, please meet at 10.00am at the Old School.
For the other three walks, meet at the Old School at 9.30am.
