Profile - Godfrey Wilkinson
Born in Surrey but growing up mainly in Yorkshire, Godfrey’s family moved to Dore in 1960 where they all became actively involved in Dore Scouts. It was here that Godfrey gained his Queen’s Scout Award and became a warranted Scout Leader. He subsequently helped organise scout social events and for many years was involved in the annual Scout & Guide Gala.
His appetite for the outdoor life and his interest in buildings encouraged him to study, train & qualify as a Chartered Surveyor and for 30 years he was an equity partner of a long established Sheffield practice of Chartered Surveyors. The firm dealt principally with commercial and industrial properties, specialising in business rates appeals. Godfrey also became familiar with planning applications and planning appeals and after retirement 15 years ago, he carried out voluntary work for the Friends of the Peak and the CPRE, reporting to their in-house planning officers upon planning applications to which objections might be raised in an effort to resist inappropriate development.
In March this year, Godfrey was invited to join the DVS Committee to assist in a similar capacity. Godfrey's leisure activities have included extensive offshore sailing, racing dinghies, catamarans & sailboards and family caravanning. He continues to practise yoga, still enjoys DIY and gets out and about as often as possible walking in the Peak District. Godfrey and his wife Christine have lived on Devonshire Road for 40 years. They have two grown up children; Andrew is a Chartered Surveyor and Julia a local Solicitor; and four grandchildren.
