My Memories of the 50s

School

Miss Partridge always had a small tin containing small blackcurrant gums, she always had one when reading a story.

On Fridays, when in Miss Palmer's class, I always went to dad's for her meat.

Vicar Heywood came to school and taught us hymns.

Home

We always had our chimney swept by Sammy Thorpe who would send us outside to watch for his brush coming out of the top of the chimney.

We lived in a cottage on High Street with Shentals grocers next door, across the road was the butchers run by Mrs Wostenholme, we called her 'Woofy'. She always gave children a toffee.

Behind the cottages was a bakers and in the village were an assortment of shops including H Frith - grocer, Levesley's butchers, Henry Bell's electrical and Mr Mosely, again fresh bread and groceries. There was also Wiggett's corner shop selling sweets, Thorpe's butchers, Mr Mace at the Post Office, the Andy Pandy wool shop run by Mrs Dyson, Mrs Thorpe's grocery store and a chemist and newsagent.

Children's programmes on TV were Watch with Mother, Muffin the Mule, Andy Pandy, Flower Pot Men, Rag, Tag and Bobtail and the Wooden Tops.

In the summer my brother and I would love to go with dad to Dad's uncle's farm on Whitelow Lane. Haymaking - well, riding on the trailer - was great fun.
