Council proposals for improving safety at the junction will be available to the public at a meeting later this month. As they stand these hinge on making Cross Lane one way which would not have prevented this accident and would itself create new traffic black spots. The only sensible answer is to build a roundabout at the junction!

13 August 2005, Recycling madness - Everyone was surprised by the appearance last week of strange metal contraptions on the tarmac in front of the newsagents shop on Causeway Head Road. These turned out to be supports from which recycling bins will be suspended.
In this day and age it beggars belief, or does it, that Onyx can install recycling bins on our pavements without any consultation with, or even advance notification to, adjacent businesses or residents. Neither local councillors or the Dore Village Society were informed.
In does not take a genius to see that the bins will act as a magnet for litter and vandalism. They create a hazard for the poorly sighted, will block the delivery of papers to the newsagents forcing delivery vehicles to park in the road at a dangerous point, while car drivers using the bins will be tempted to park on the adjacent private drive.
The Society and local councillors are trying to establish how this all happened and get the bins resited. All we know at the time of going to press is that the workmen involved have said Sheffield Highways Department gave Onyx carte blanche, declaring the contraptions to be street furniture, and so not requiring planning permission!
We are all in favour of recycling, but when will the powers that be realise that to succeed they need to work with communities, not against them.
John Baker, Chairman, Dore Village Society
12 August ... Anger at bus service reductions. Residents in Dore and Totley are upset over the scaling down of bus services during August. More than 400 have signed a protest petition. Part of a reduced summer programme bus managers say is necessary because there are traditionally fewer passengers.

1 July 2005 (Letter received today)
Help us defend our city's character.
The threat to the character of large parts of the south west of Sheffield from insensitive property development is an issue which has been raised with me by many constituents. It is an understandable issue of wide public concern.
That is why I hope as many residents as possible will participate in the consultation exercise launched by the city council as preparations are made for a new Sheffield Development Framework.
An "Emerging Options" document can be found on the Sheffield city council website http://www.Sheffield.gov.uk and search for Emerging Options), which sets out two alternative options for the scale of future housing development in south and west Sheffield to promote housing development that seeks to meet the market demand for the area, or limit any additional housing development e.g. low level infill and no new sites for housing development.
Comments on the various options can be sent to sdf@sheffield.gov.uk or in writing to: SDF Team, Development Services, Howden House, 1 Union Street, Sheffield, S1 2SH, tel: (0114) 273 4212.
Many residents will, no doubt, have strong views on the future housing development strategy in their neighbourhood. This consultation exercise gives them the perfect opportunity to make their views known.
Nick Clegg MP
The deadline for this informal consultation is 22 July. There will be a further formal consultation period next year.
Note: Dore Village Society (John Baker) now has a copy of the 256 page "Emerging Options for the Core Strategy" document that Nick Clegg refers to in his letter, should anyone wish to look at it. (7/07/05)
29/06/05 - The application by brewers Mitchells and Butler to extend the opening hours of the Hare and Hounds has been granted, allowing it to stay open from 10am to midnight every day from November (see 21/06/06).
27/06/2005 - On a beautiful sunny day, 23 people joined the first walk in the Dore Festival Walking Week. Led by David Heslop, the group enjoyed a 5 mile walk starting from Grindleford. There are walks each day this week. Details from David Bearpark on 236 9100
22/6/2005: Traffic was brought to a standstill for some time at Wednesday lunchtime as the result of a crash between two cars at the junction of Vicarage Lane and Dore Road. Fire engines, police and ambulance services were called to the scene. Five people were taken to hospital including the women drivers of the Peugeot 206 and Toyota Avensis Verso and two children. It is not known what injuries were received.
22/6/2005: Local fury has arisen over the discovery that a council house on Totley Brook Grove has stood empty for 6 months after the successful applicants from the nearly 170 who applied failed to move in. A subsequent application by the successful tenants to buy the property was turned down. We understand that the length of previous Council tenancies in other properties counts towards the generous discounts buyers can obtain.
21/6/05: The Hare & Hounds will hear next Wednesday whether an application to extend opening hours will be granted by the Council Licensing Board. Council environment officers are concerned about disturbance to nearby residents and suggest shorter hours of 11.30pm Sunday to Thursday and 0.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.
