Dore Garden Club Programme of Events for 2011
Unless stated otherwise in the programme meetings will be in the Dore Methodist Church hall from 7:30 pm to approximately 9:00 pm.

| March 21st, Wednesday | Poisonous Plants | Sue Kohler, past chair of FOBS |
| Sue will be talking about the many poisonous plants which can be found in both in the wild and cultivated in gardens and conservatories. She will describe what makes them poisonous, and the effects and symptoms of poisoning. | ||
| April 19th, Thursday | A History of Whinfell Quarry Gardens | Kath Cox of Friends of Whinfell Quarry Gardens |

| May 16th, Wednesday | My Favourite Top Ten Gardens | Don Whitton, holder of the National Collection of Euphorbias |
| This talk isn’t about historic parks or large landscaped gardens but just fabulous gardens where herbaceous plants take pride of place . | ||
| June 21st, Thursday | Renishaw Hall Gardens | |
| This is an evening walk through the gardens of Renishaw Hall with one of the gardeners. There will be an additional cost for this meeting of £9 for members and £11 for non members. Please note that this meeting starts earlier than usual; we meet at the Hall at 6:15pm . |

| July 18th, Wednesday | A visit to two local gardens at 122 & 124 Dobcroft Road | Our hosts are Dr Simon and Mrs Julie Olpin |
| No. 122 is an attractive 250ft long garden with colourful herbaceous borders, two wildlife ponds, a productive vegetable garden with raised beds and a greenhouse. There’s a fine old oak tree, a summerhouse and various secluded sitting areas. No. 124 has an informal garden with mainly hardy exotic plants used to create a jungle effect. This is a long, narrow, site (about 250ft long) densely planted with mature trees, eucalypts, acacias, many large bamboos, palms, tree ferns and bananas. Entrance to both gardens - £2 for members and £4 for non-members Please note that this meeting starts at the earlier time of 6:45 |

| September 19th, Wednesday | Jersey Royal - The magnificent gardens of Jersey | Stuart Dixon |
| Our presenter, Stuart Dixon, is a lecturer, writer and broadcaster, who has restored his 18th century garden at Hebbs Farm in the Trent valley in Nottinghamshire. His talk will describe various gardens in Jersey, including one which was (and possibly still is) owned by the president of the Camellia Conference. And which of course has lots of camellias! He will also talk about the plants that can be grown in gardens in Jersey`s more temperate climate . |

| Linda will talk about creating and planting a pond, caring for ponds and water features, choosing plants and livestock, and ongoing maintenance . | ||
| November 21st, Wednesday | AGM followed by “Honey Bees” - their importance and what gardeners can do about their decline | Jez Daughtry of the Sheffield Honey Company |
| Jez will describe how he became interested in honey bees and what it is like to be a bee keeper. He will also talk about the role of honey bees and their importance in agriculture and domestic gardens, and how gardeners can help sustain healthy populations . | ||
